Hi Matt. Could I ask your opinion on something? If you send out your chapters to an agent, and they say, give us at least 6 weeks to get back to you, and more than 8 weeks have passed, do they get pissed off if you ask them politely if they're still interested? I took your advice and sent out my book to only one agent, and I'm still waiting to hear back. I just wondered if by asking, would it be the kiss of death for my submission? I don't want to annoy somebody, but I don't want to wait forever either. I know they're busy, and we had the holiday period, but I was just wondering if it was acceptable to contact them.
Any help would be appreciated.

I think it would be fair to say that you could get in touch with them. Be polite, but couch your phrasing so it doesn't sound like you're pushing them for an answer. Ask if they received your book safely as you had not heard anything back from them. Tell them if it did not arrive then you would like to send it them again. This would prompt them to answer you as to if they had looked at it yet or not. I wouldn't push for a yes or no, because more than likely they would just say no (less hassle for them, if you understand what I'm saying).
On the sending it them one at a time, if you wanted to speed up the process you could send it off to a few at a time, but do state in any communication that you have sent multiple submissions out. Remember though that if you got an acceptance from one, then you'd probably have to withdraw your book from the other agents to keep things straight between them.
It's an awkward and frustrating scenario, isn't it?
There are mixed opinions over multiple submissions. Really, it is your right to send to as many people as you want, but agents also like to see loyalty and like to think that you have approached them and them only. Loyalty wins out.

Thanks a lot, Matt. As ever, your opinion is valued as you've been through the mill too! I will write a polite enquiry, and let them know I understand how busy they are etc, and I'll take your advice and ask them if it got there ok.
