I lie to you?<o:p></o:p></span></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">I make stuff up for a living. I’m not a
professional liar; I’m an author of fiction books. It’s a weird contradiction
considering one of the things I dislike most is telling a lie. I try to temper
both aspects of my psyche by reassuring myself that when writing fiction it’s
more a bending of reality than a downright untruth. So I’m happy enough with
that. Except sometimes reality can prove not only stranger than fiction, it can
sometimes overtake it to a point where it is almost unbelievable. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>When
I was writing my most recent Joe Hunter novel, Marked For Death, I had him
stumbling into a terrorist plot to attack soft targets in the US. Some of the
scenes I’d written reflected too closely the shocking attacks that subsequently
occurred in London and Manchester, so I went back and changed them. It wasn’t
because I wanted to shy away from the horror experienced by the victims of the
attacks, but neither did I want to cause them any distress. I don’t write
action thrillers to glorify violence, but to show how ugly and damaging it
really is. I stuck with the plot, if not the individual scenes, and instead of
avoiding the issue altogether I wove the incidents into the narrative to add a
touch of realism to my fiction. In one way, I guess that by still sending
Hunter up against the bad guys I was thumbing my nose at those lunatics trying
to terrify us into changing our way of life. But then, maybe I’m thinking too
deep.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>No.
I write primarily for entertainment’s sake. The Joe Hunter books aren’t some
social, political or religious comment on the state of the world. They’re there
for fun and a visceral kick of adrenaline. I make ’em up, so that readers can
escape reality for a few hours, where they can cheer for the good guys and boo
and hiss at the baddies. For this one I’ve ramped up the action to please my
long time fans, and hopefully to give new readers another hero to root for.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>If
you haven’t tried a Hunter book before, it’s probably a good idea for me to
introduce him. Hunter is British, an ex-soldier who once worked for a fictional
counterterrorism unit, but is now out in the world with little direction and a
heap of physical skills. In the books he works for his friend Jared ‘Rink’
Rington’s private investigations firm in the USA. But Hunter isn’t an
investigator; he is employed to do the kind of work where some physical
intervention might be required. He tends to be a protector first, and sometimes
a vehicle for vengeance. He isn’t afraid to use his fists or his gun when
trouble arises, and he’s the type to attract trouble. In some respects he’s a
throw back to earlier days, a bit like the lawmen of the Wild West, tough and
uncompromising, with a set of questionable morals, but also good at heart. His
adventures aren’t what you find in your typical British crime fiction novel,
and aren’t whodunits or police procedurals, they’re more race against time
thrillers. There’s a reason why I chose to write in this style and it’s because
it’s the type of book I prefer to read. I grew up reading what used to be
termed men’s action adventure books (now more commonly called action thrillers)
and was hugely inspired by them when I set out on my own writing career.
American authors wrote many of those books, and so I’ve absorbed more of their
tropes than I have of classic British crime fiction writers. Crime obviously
plays a huge part in the Hunter series, but viewed from a different angle than
a mystery to be solved, and more a problem to be dealt with. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

For Death is the twelfth book in the Joe Hunter series, but fear not, it is a
standalone adventure, and a good place at which to meet Hunter if you choose to
pick up the book. Despite the dark and fearful nature of the crimes involved,
it’s a fun and frantic ride. And like I said, it’s makey-up stuff, although set
against a very real backdrop, and genuine threat. In my humble opinion I
believe it’s Hunter’s most explosive adventure to date. Honest. Would I lie to
you?</span><o:p></o:p></span></div>

to Eat an Elephant<o:p></o:p></span></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">At author events, and during interviews,
I’m often asked what my working day consists of, and how I approach my writing.
So I thought this could be a good opportunity to explain. Since leaving the
police force to write full-time in 2008, I’ve managed to pen (actually that
should be type, as I work direct onto my computer screen these days) twenty-two
published novels, with between 90 and 120 thousand words in each, as well as a
raft of short stories, novellas and flash fiction, primarily in the action
thriller genre, but also some horror and supernatural. That’s not including all
the words I write for articles, interviews and on the social media networks, of
course – I’ve probably written more there than ever ended up in any published
volume. When I say that, some people blink in surprise, and wonder aloud how I
manage to write so much. The trite answer is that it’s my job, but in reality
it’s also what I enjoy doing. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>I’m
paraphrasing but there’s an old adage that goes something like “to eat an
elephant take only one bite at a time”, and it’s with that steady approach to
manageable chunks that I go. When you think about it, writing one thousand
words a day is achievable (it’s less the length of this blog post). In 90 days,
that’s 90 thousand words, and about the length of a modern manuscript of
approximately 300 pages in book form. If you double your word count, you can
write a 90K words rough draft in as little as one and a half months. That isn’t
to say that your book is finished by any means, as editing and re-writing must
be taken into account, but you can see how the daunting prospect of writing a
book might not seem as impossible any more. Obviously I’m in the enviable
position of having the time to write, to get down my word count, but being an
author these days isn’t just about writing a book – there’s so much more that
must be done that ekes into my time too. I’m still a family man with
commitments, and part of my job these days is to engage with readers and attend
library and bookshop events, and conventions, so every day isn’t a writing day.
But I do try to write every day, even if it’s only a paragraph or two – each
little bit of that elephant I tackle makes less to face tomorrow. When I’m on a
deadline, I set myself a daily target of two thousand words, and I force myself
to sit down and get them done. Usually, once I know where the book is headed
and the adrenaline kicks in as the end comes in sight, I speed up, and it’s not
unknown for me to write two or three times as much per day.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>I’m
not much of a forward planner. I prefer to write by the seat of my pants.
Usually I have a theme in mind, a very basic plot and where things might end
up. Then I start at the beginning and write through to the end, usually being
surprised by the direction the story takes itself as I go. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>There’s no right and wrong way to write. Some
authors prefer to meticulously plot their books, and write out a mass of notes,
plot chapters and scenes beforehand, before ever getting down to writing the
book itself. That’s good. I’m the opposite. But that’s good too. As is every
other method in between. You have to find the way that suits you. I’ve tried
plotting books out chapter by chapter and found myself getting bored, or going
so far off tangent that getting the story back on its original track is almost
impossible. I prefer my writing to be almost organic, growing in my mind as I
put down new seeds on paper. I also write quite visually. By that I mean I
choreograph scenes in my mind’s eye the way a movie director might, choosing
the best angle, the best point of view to show the action from, and then
translate them into the medium of prose. Often, by the action-packed nature of
my books, I get caught up in the writing, and have been known to bounce about on
my chair, fist-pumping the air while wearing a silly grin.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>My
research method is similarly as organic. There’s nothing like getting your feet
on the ground, and hearing, smelling, tasting and touching the environment to
get a genuine feel for the places you write about. But because I’m often
writing about the USA while sitting at my desk in a rural corner of northern
England, that option isn’t always open to me. So I rely a lot on the Internet
and Google Earth etc. But what I prefer to do is look out random facts, then
follow other links to something I wasn’t looking for in the first place. It’s
those little surprise finds that often add flavour to your writing, rather than
some info dump grabbed wholesale from Wikipedia or some other source.
Occasionally I come across a fact or even place or feature that I simply have
to incorporate into the story. It’s also not unknown for me to make stuff up:
I’m a fiction writer after all. Seriously though, by that I mean I’ve created
towns and streets and islands that exist only in my imagination, where to use a
real location might upset those living there, or bring down the value of their
property when I blow up their homes (not literally of course).<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>I
tend to edit as I go. My first task is to go over what I worked on the previous
day. I re-read and titivate. It’s an exercise that gets me back into ‘voice’
and also reminds me of what was on my mind when I last left off. From there I
continue writing, and then repeat the process the next day. Often when I get to
the end of the book I end up with an almost clean draft that I then submit to
my editor. It’s never perfect, but any rewriting after that tends to be minimal
to pick up hanging plot threads or major boo boo’s I might have missed. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US" style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>And
the dreaded writer’s block? I can’t allow it to stall me. If I’m struggling to
write I switch and go and do something different. I’ll write something for a
blog, or a short story with different characters, or even mess about on
Facebook for a while. As long as I’m writing, the problem seems to resolve
itself and I’m able to return to my original piece with the heel-dragging demon
exorcised.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

It’s real. I’m actually called Matthew, but that’s my Sunday name, or when I’m

No, like me, Hunter is a Brit northerner, raised in Manchester who joined the
army, and was later drafted into an experimental counterterrorism group called
Arrowsake. After leaving the forces he fell into a vigilante mode in Manchester,
before heading off to the USA in search of his wayward missing half-brother,
and he has never come home. He now works for his pal Jared ‘Rink’ Rington’s PI
outfit based in Tampa, Florida, where he is usually called on when his

<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span lang="EN-US" style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">A:
To be honest, although I see myself primarily as a crime fiction writer, I’m
not a big reader of British crime fiction. I grew up reading American
thrillers, so when I started writing I gravitated to what I knew best. Also,
because Hunter’s adventures tend to be slightly over the top action pieces, I
wanted an arena large and diverse enough to contain them and the USA offered
the choice of so many differing locations. Having Hunter as a Brit allows me to
use his ‘an Englishman abroad’ attitude to lace some humour into the books, and
to also cover for me when I get some of the details wrong – I can say Hunter
made the mistake not me.<o:p></o:p></span></span></b></div>

Not as such. I tend to steer away from police procedure and go for a more
action driven element to the plots. However, I do rely on my experience to put
myself in the shoes of those caught up in the action, and occasionally drop in
a few anecdotal stories from my police background – suitably disguised – to add
a little realism or dark humour. <o:p></o:p></span></span></b></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span lang="EN-US" style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">A:
First off, it’s a huge honour to be mentioned in the same sentence as either
Child or Reacher, both of whom I admire deeply. I’m pretty sure that many of
Reacher’s readers will enjoy the Hunter books (but some may not). The
comparison is made because both our characters are ex-servicemen righting wrongs
in the US, but they’re totally different characters. Reacher is far more cerebral
than Hunter, and often thinks and plans before he punches anyone whereas Hunter
is more spontaneous and volatile and often falls into deep trouble because of
it. Reacher is a loner, but Hunter works with his close friend Rink and various
other supporting characters. The Reacher books tend to have mysteries to be
solved, whereas Hunter is usually thrust into an adventure. Saying that,
they’re both in the same genre, and will probably appeal to readers for that
same reason, as long as you come into them with no expectations. <o:p></o:p></span></span></b></div>

No. Hunter is the amalgamation of various characters I read about while growing
up (Mack Bolan, Remo Williams, John Rambo, Saul Grisman, The Punisher, Joshua “Edge”
Hedges, and even Judge Dredd), plus characters I wrote about and developed
along the way in previous books. The similarities with Reacher could easily be

Sure. To date there have been eleven previous Hunter books, plus a bunch of
short stories. Marked For Death is book twelve, but can easily be read as a
standalone. I’ve kind of gone a little easy on Hunter in the last couple of
books, but with this one I’ve thrown him headlong into what I believe is his
most explosive adventure to date. When he intervenes in what first appears to
be a domestic dispute he has no idea what kind of trouble he’s getting himself
– and his friends – into, and is soon on the run from heavily armed killers and
caught up in a plot ripped direct from today’s headlines. <o:p></o:p></span></span></b></div>

fan of John Connolly, Jack (J.A.) Kerley, Stephen Leather, Tom Wood, Mason
Cross, Sean Black, Dean Koontz, Adam Neville, and Robert Crais. Authors you
might not have come across yet but are some favourites of mine are Adrian
Magson, James Hilton (yes, he’s my brother but a damned good thriller writer),
Graham Smith, Mike Craven, Rod Glenn and Paul D Brazill – if you haven’t tried
any of those guys yet, you’re missing out. There are so many other great
authors I could mention, but would undoubtedly miss someone, so I’d best leave

<div class="MsoNormal">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span lang="EN-US" style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">A:
I’ve been a writer for as far back as I can recall. I began as a small child at
school, and one of my earliest memories is reading Bambi, and also seeing the
movie of Watership Down. I immediately set out to write a story featuring baby
deer fighting to survive when loggers threatened their forest. After that my
next big inspiration came when I discovered that my favourite author – Willard
Price – had died and there’d be no more of his animal adventure books, so I
took it on myself to write a sequel called Antarctic Adventure. That I had a
polar bear and penguins sharing the ice alongside a humongous mutant walrus
doesn’t matter when you’re about ten years old. So, I could say that my
inspiration has come from wanting to emulate the writers I admired. I started
writing crime fiction after reading men’s adventure books and American
thrillers, so the same could be said for my adult career too.<o:p></o:p></span></span></b></div>

<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span lang="EN-US" style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">In
regards advice, the best thing I can say is to follow your dream and never give
up. I first planned on being an author when I was very young and didn’t give
up, despite decades of trying and failing before I got my first publishing
agreement. Write what you know – by that go with a subject you’re familiar with
or have grown familiar with through research – and also write the kind of book
you’d love to read. That way your voice comes across more naturally, and also
you’ll enjoy the experience of writing your book more. I’m not saying anything
is wrong with taking lessons or creative writing courses, or any other route,
but the best thing I found for me was to write a lot and read a lot in your
chosen genre, and learn through the process of doing. Also settle down for the hard
slog because it takes stamina to finish a book, but when you do, boy was it
worth it.<o:p></o:p></span></span></b></div>

<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">High-concept, speculative fiction all delivered in a rip-roaring action adventure, from the best-selling author of the Joe Hunter thrillers. </span><br style="font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: "verdana" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What if everything we thought we understood about the nature of time was wrong? </span><br style="font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: "verdana" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In the nuclear devastated landscape of London, James Rembrandt delivers law and order with a firm hand and uncompromising resolve. In his violent world it takes a violent man when dealing with cannibalistic scavengers. But Rembrandt was never born to the hellish Old City: he is a man out of time and place, but even he doesn’t know it. </span><br style="font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: "verdana" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When he is snatched from death, and deposited in an alternate time and dimension, he has finally come home. But he has returned to a place alien to him, and a world suddenly on the verge of destruction when a wormhole tethered between dimensions begins merging both Earths. Our world is about to be consumed, and the future of mankind relies on Rembrandt. He must again transvect, this time to avert the war that destroyed his parallel world, and seal the planet destroying breaches. He has already died once: he could die again. But what is one man’s worth compared to that of billions? </span></span><br />

<br />
Totally unexpected as it was, I recently heard from BIG AL'S BOOKS AND PALS - an excellent review site that concentrates on ebook and indie published books - informing me that my ghost/paranormal thriller 'THE SHADOWS CALL' has been shortlisted for a readers choice award. I'm chuffed to bits at the news, because it is validation of the book I hadn't expected.<br />
<br />
Voting is open at Big Al's now through until midnight on March 28th (mountain time USA). Anyone who would like to vote can do so by the link supplied above, where there are some great prizes on offer as incentives to readers. I wish all the nominees luck, and win or lose, I'm still over the moon.<br />

Recently I was asked to contribute to an anthology of "military horror" by editor Geoff Brown of <a href="http://cohesionpress.com/">Cohesion Press</a>, and am thoroughly pleased to announce that my short story "After the Red Rain Fell" will be included in the upcoming SNAFU: Survival of the Fittest, alongside some military horror stalwarts like S.D Perry, Weston Ochse, Jeremy Robinson, Kane Gilmour and Joseph Nassise.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">You can check out the full line-up for this highly anticipated collection right here: <a href="http://cohesionpress.com/our-books/snafu/snafu-ii-survival-of-the-fittest/">http://cohesionpress.com/our-books/snafu/snafu-ii-survival-of-the-fittest/</a></span><br />

Bestselling British author Matt Hilton and indie-publisher Down & Out Books have joined forces to publish books 7, 8 and 9 in his Joe Hunter thriller series for the first time in the United States.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“No Going Back, Rules of Honor and The Lawless Kind will be released in America this coming January, June and November simultaneously as trade paperbacks and ebooks,” said Eric Campbell, Down & Out Books publisher “Matt’s Joe Hunter series is an outstanding action/adventure ride and I couldn’t be more pleased to have this opportunity to work with him.”</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
No Going Back, the 7th book in the series, finds Joe Hunter helping Jameson Walker find his daughter and her friend who went missing at a gas station in the Arizona desert. As Joe picks up the girls’ trail, he discovers that other young women have also disappeared in the area, and comes across the brutish Logan family.</div>
<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Rules of Honor finds Joe trying to prevent his pal Rink from seeking vengeance when his father is brutally murdered because his mother, Yukiko isn’t telling everything she knows. But when there are more vicious deaths — all of them elderly men known to Yukiko — it becomes a matter of honor to uncover the shameful secret that lies behind the murders. Since the killer isn’t playing by the rules, Joe doesn’t care what he breaks to ensure Rink gets his revenge.</div>

<div style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In The Lawless Kind, Joe helps bring an end to a Mexican cartel that preys on the people they smuggle across the U.S. border. Once resolved, Joe’s mission leader and mentor admits the mission was not the real reason for Joe to be summoned. His mentor’s great-grandson has been abducted by the leader of one of Mexico’s largest drug cartels. Joe’s mentor, Walter, will do whatever it takes to get the boy back. And he knows Joe is the man for the job.</div>

Matt Hilton, who was born in Scotland and was raised and lives in England, quit his career as a police officer to pursue writing as his full-time vocation. His first Joe Hunter thriller was published in 2009 and was short-listed for the ITW Debut Thriller Award. There are currently ten Joe Hunter books in the series and he sees no end in sight. “I enjoy cinematic American-style thrillers, and Joe Hunter fits the tradition of such strong, determined avengers as Lee Child’s Jack Reacher and Robert Crais’ Joe Pike.”</div>

<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">When asked if I believe in an after-life or in ghosts, I usually dither in answering, but not through embarrassment, it's simply because I haven't come to a firm conclusion yet, and might never (until I'm dead and find out one way or the other - or don't if everything just turns black). But if anyone asks if I believe in paranormal phenomena, then I don't pause: I do.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">That statement might sound contradictory to you.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">Well either I believe or I don't right?</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">No. Not necessarily.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">It's all a matter of opinion, in exactly what you refer to when mentioning a ghost or paranormal phenomena. You can have the latter without the presence of a ghost, but not the other way around. But then that statement is slightly contentious in what exactly you mean by a 'ghost'. If you mean a sentient, disembodied spirit of a deceased person, then I'm still sitting on the fence as to if they exist or not. I'm leaning towards not, but am in flux and my belief might change based on evidence I witness or record myself. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">To me there's a real problem in the 'paranormal' world where too much anomalous phenomena is all lumped together under one banner. Sadly, in this case, it only takes one of those sub-categories to be poo-poohed and it throws doubt on everything else. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">Taking ghosts in particular:</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">Remember a few years ago where every man and his dog was presenting out-of-focus dust, pollen, insects, water droplets and lens flare as proof of spirits, calling them orbs? It has got to a stage now where the subject of orbs makes me cringe. That's a shame, because free floating, seemingly intelligent orbs of light have been seen, witnessed and recorded, but buried beneath the deluge of other misidentified mundane artefacts, the subject has largely been dismissed by most people. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">Also, on too many occasions to count, I've seen videos purporting to show a ghost which is actually an out of focus insect, near to the camera lens, reflecting the light. These have all been dismissed, or derided, and it has only helped throw doubt on possibly genuine captures of 'something unexplained' on film. It doesn't help that - with the advent of Youtube and certain 'caught on camera' type movies - that every prankster out there has uploaded their own fake ghost video or photo to the internet. Again it has buried genuine evidence, and thrown disrepute on the subject matter. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">OK, I'm rambling, but it's just to make a point and it's this: I don't believe 95% of what I've seen presented as evidence of ghosts, but there is still that 5% that makes me consider the possibilities.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">With such a small percentage, you'd wonder why I have any interest in the subject at all. Well, evidence is just that, but it isn't proof. And being an open-minded sceptic I demand proof before I'll accept something as real. The thing is, 5% of belief is far weightier than 95% of disbelief, and I admit to having a huge interest in paranormal phenomena in general (ghosts as dead people only being a very small part of it).</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">You might be confused, and I don't blame you. With 'ghosts' there are too many different kinds of spectral apparitions lumped under one banner, and it only takes one to be dismissed to eliminate any belief in the rest. In my opinion this shouldn't be the case. For instance you have 'replay ghost apparitions', 'sentient apparitions', 'crisis apparitions', 'poltergeists', 'shadow figures', 'negative energy', 'portent apparitions', and many many more, each with their individual and unique traits and mostly little to do with each other. Some I can accept, others I can easily dismiss.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">I watch old movies. On the screen are images captured of (mostly) dead people. I listen to old records. On the record is the voices of (mostly) dead people. I look at old photos. On the photos are images of (mostly) dead people. In some respects all are 'ghosts' of the once living, breathing people, who are now (mostly) consigned to history. But they aren't sentient spirits, they're recordings. But is that to say that 'ghosts' aren't recordings either? Are the spectral apparitions, the disembodied voices, replays of moments from the past, perhaps trapped in the atmosphere or some medium like stone, wood or water, that under certain atmospheric or even mental conditions get released and witnessed by an observer? I can accept this. These are the 'ghosts' that seem to be caught in a loop, where they go about their own business, and are unaware of you or even a change in environment. Take the 'white lady' who walks through walls where there was once a door, or the Roman soldiers marching to war, their legs obscured because the road was much lower down in their day.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">When a 'ghost' is apparently sentient, and interacts with its observer, this is obviously something else - but a wandering spirit? I'm not sure here.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">Poltergeists have taken on some notoriety. But in most Poltergeist occurrences there are no reports of apparitions of 'ghosts', more usually are there loud noises, the movement of objects, spontaneous fires, and other 'playful' but frightening activity. It seems more akin to some kind of kinetic discharge of energy than it does the work of a spirit. Do I believe this possible? Yes, I do. Do I believe it's the work of a spirit? I'm not sure, but am open to the idea - with proof.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">EVP - electronic voice phenomena - continues to bewilder and fascinate me. This is where voices are recorded on devices where the voice was not apparent to the listener at the time. It's real. I've recorded it myself. But is it the work of a 'spirit' or of some other unexplainable source? I'm yet to make up my mind on this subject, but I still find it fascinating and a good contender that something 'otherworldly' is going on around us.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">I don't buy into Ouija boards and planchettes, (most) mediums or seances - they are too easily influenced through conscious or unconscious fraud. But other methods of contacting and recording plausible phenomena does make me wonder. I've witnessed interesting results while using detuned radio receivers, Infra-red cameras, Ultra-violet cameras, full spectrum cameras, digital recording devices, and still photos. I've yet to catch what I'd definitively call 'proof' but yes, I've found evidence that leans towards it and do intend continuing recording this evidence in the future.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">Any way, I'm probably battering on too much, without getting to the actual point of this post. I just wanted you to understand where I stand on the subject before relating how I came to write my latest book: The Shadows Call.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-F0wsRKsYdNw/VFy8rrSdwlI/AAAAAAAAB-w/CU_pkezj-VQ/s1600/Theshadowscall.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-F0wsRKsYdNw/VFy8rrSdwlI/AAAAAAAAB-w/CU_pkezj-VQ/s1600/Theshadowscall.jpg" height="400" width="223" /></span></a></div>
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">The book has been sitting inside me for many years, demanding release and it's all because of a series of personal events back in the mid 1980's that got me interested in the subject in the first place.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">Me and my soon-to-be wife decided to move in together, and being on a budget at the time, we had to take up lodgings in privately rented digs in an old Victorian house on Warwick Road, Carlisle. It wasn't the most salubrious of homes, but it was what it was, and what we could afford. From the outset it creeped me out and I can't quite put my finger on why, but I didn't enjoy being there alone. And while we lived there things only got worse. There was a sense of presence, as if we were being watched: constantly. There were unusual noises emanating from out of the ether. TV channels switched to and fro by themselves, and the TV would turn on and off at random. Doors became stuck and unstuck within seconds, usually thwarting us one moment before sliding open by themselves the next. Ornaments moved by themselves in the living room (witnessed by a number of different friends and family members). Our guard dog, Zeus, a tough German Shepherd was scared to go upstairs and would actually whine if we tried to coax it. My wife suffered a recurring nightmare of being chased by a faceless shadowman throughout the house nightly. On one occasion I'd to save my wife from drowning in the bath after she swore she was pushed under by unseen hands. Something eerie changed after we opened up a boarded up basement and found it to be untouched since the Victorian era, and it was as if we'd released a fresh number of 'entities' into our living quarters. Visitors used to be frightened to progress through the hall, after being certain they'd just witnessed a figure in red hanging from the ceiling (I never seen this myself but plenty others did). Lastly we were wakened one night by loud bangs and thumps emanating from inside a walk-in closet in our bedroom. When I checked, it was empty, but on banging on the back wall I recreated the bangs we'd been hearing. The closet backed on to the wall where numerous people swore they saw someone hanging, so you can probably imagine what went through our minds. This was very frightening and the last straw and we fled in fear of what was coming next. Now then, in hindsight, and with my sceptical head on, I can singly rationalise most of these events now, but when all are added together, over such a small space of time (a few months) it's hard to pass them all off as misidentified natural phenomena. There was something weird going on. For the record we had sole use of the property after business hours and at the weekend (there was a shop downstairs that closed early evening) and had no neighbours, and were on a corner lot. This was back in the old days where people didn't have mobile phones, and there was no such thing as Sunday shopping, and the traffic was lighter. With my sceptical head on I can try to put down some of the events to outside elements (radio signals affecting the Tv for instance, or subsidence or damp affecting the house's structure etc), but at the same time I know I'm being overly critical and don't really believe my own arguments. Also for the record, I didn't see an apparition, but yes, I felt something odd, and also caught fleeting shadow figures nipping just out of sight. Sceptics will say this was down to an over-active imagination (they might be right, I'm a creative person after all and write fiction) or the presence of high EMF or ultrasound, sleep paralysis or other such tripe that's usually dragged out, but that is their right, I guess. (Hey, I'm only having a gentle poke back at the cynics so don't get too het up - remember that I'm a sceptic too).</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">Any way, I believe we lived in what I'd term a 'haunted house'. It's just 'what' was haunting it that still eludes me. But everything that happened has stayed with me all these years and - like I said - has demanded to be put down on paper. Now, if I'd just written down my story, it might be mildly interesting, but it doesn't contain much drama for the reader in search of entertainment, so I have woven a fictional element into the narrative, telling the story of Jack Newman and how he comes to believe in ghosts and of shadow people in particular. Because I'm primarily a crime thriller writer, there was always going to be a murder at the heart of the story, and I've woven this in too. But the fictional elements are all backed up by real events, and also genuine examples of other paranormal events, as well as practices I've conducted while carrying out paranormal investigations (for want of a better term).</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">Do you need to believe in ghosts to enjoy the book? No. You just need to enjoy reading a mystery, and come to your own conclusions at the end. I'm not trying to convince anybody one way or another, it's down to you what you think. I just hope you enjoy the read.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;"><b>The Shadows Call</b> is now available as a Kindle ebook: </span><a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00PCHT3FE/ref=cm_sw_r_fa_dp_byExub099EJPY" style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: yellow; font-size: large;">http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00PCHT3FE/ref=cm_sw_r_fa_dp_byExub099EJPY</span></a><br />

<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">Oh, one last thing. I'm not a total sceptic. I do believe in paranormal phenomena, but it is only para (outside) until it is explained, and I think that somewhere down the line some answers will become known to us and what we currently perceive to be weird will be accepted (like the world actually being round even though heretics were once burned at the stake for stating the obvious). Whether that is in proof of 'ghosts' as dead people's spirits is still debatable, but I'm confident that other phenomena like EVP and 'poltergeist/kinetic' activity will be scientifically explained in the future. But then again, what do I know....</span><br />

<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3; font-size: large;">Caveat: this is not a debate on individual beliefs, faith or religion. Please do not attack me with your arguments of demons, djinn and angels, or that I must be a loony, drunk or deluded. This is what I think, not what I think you should. Respect.</span><br />

My bad.<span style="background-color: black; color: #f3f3f3;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; text-align: left;">I was just flicking through reviews of my books on Amazon.com (as needy authors are wont to do occasionally) and came across the quote below from a disgruntled reader (who actually did enjoy the book). I'm not grumbling, each to their own opinion. But I am surprised at how much killing off a character impacted on him. He jokingly mentioned almost throwing his Kindle across the room because I wasn't there</span><span class="text_exposed_show" style="display: inline; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; text-align: left;"> to beat up.<br /><br />"This is a great book, but I purely hate author's screwing up good books and stories by killing off characters just for the he'll of it. I was a fan of Matt Hilton's books, but I am through with anything with his name on it from this day forward. Unfortunately, if you are reading this review, you'll have to read the book to see what I'm so upset about."<br /><br />I think he was referring to Kate Piers in Slash and Burn. If only he knew that it was an editorial decision and not originally mine to kill off Kate he might not be as upset with me. Any way, if he does go back and read the following books, he will see how Kate's death became an important motivator for Joe in the subsequent books, so it was not a worthless "just for the hell of it" death after all. sadly, he's decided he's through with anything with my name on it, so he'll likely never know.<br /><br />Wow. The power of books, eh?</span></span>Authorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12033131935968488175noreply@blogger.com0
